puppet construction process

  1. felting kit to add texture to body – was advised by virpi and ended up being a time-effective way to construct the puppets and create a to-scale realistic texture
  2. crafting the base structure of doobee out of blocks of wood, drilling in holes for K&S and twisted armature wire


3. attaching latex covered armature wire limbs to main wooden structure – if we could redo this process we would dye the latex first before dipping the wires as acrylic paint flaked off the latex afterward and did not look as effective

4. felting doobee – was a long process but worthwhile to get the ‘fuzzy’ effect that worked really well, would work for crower as well

  1. creating body out of wood, legs out of 3D printed elements – had ideas on making a joint to make legs moveable but found twisting armature wire worked better and was an easier, more feasible solution
  2. K&S used to insert joints into wooden body – created stable joint that didn’t move

4. assembling parts together and texturing legs further with shades of paint to create rusted effect as plain black looked too flat, needed more personality and realism






feb 27: virpi kettu talk/tutorials






  • pointed out a lot of animation techniques that we hadn’t considered yet so far in much detail (squash and stretch, cushioning), consideration needed for when we are animating first hand
  • puppet making skills incredibly helpful to guide us to make our puppets as we did not have a clear idea of how to technically make them
  • decided on wire armature and felting after discussion, would be most time-effective and practical for our project

  • group had a burst of inspiration during development, all were hitting a creative block whilst trying to reach unified concept for sets, tried creating a quick 3D mockup model together with newspaper to illustrate our combined ideas –> worked extremely well


design mockups for crowder and doobee, not to scaleĀ 

  • as set mockups worked so well, i created mockups of the characters to achieve same purpose of being able to decide on final designs by seeing them in 3D format
  • illustrated my ideas a lot more effectively –> next step is creating to-scale mockups so they can be seen inside the set and moved around

  • to scale mockup – was too small to fit into exterior set as scale reference used was only the interior –> scale for both sets needs to be considered for final characters measurements
