17 june: sketchup model

i have previously used sketchup for last year’s projects, however i have never created a full floor plan of a space. found it relatively easy to transfer existing skills to create model 

creating WCM first was very helpful in visualising in 3D space of room, was able to fix small changes needed to WCM whilst creating sketchup model eg. sizes of windows, placement of doors

textures and rendering colour: was able to insert original wallpaper reference pictures to tile and use to fill in walls, looked quite effective and was relevant to the design i wanted, relevant to the era

15 june: white card model

second time making a WCM was significantly easier after again doing the transforming a location project, photocopying the technical drawing to paste onto card was time-effective and accurate way to make WCM

was easier to visualise in my mind going from 2D drawing to 3D model with experience

in my first WCM, i did not create detatchable set and strike walls, in this one i made sure to create one for each room to able to photograph model and look inside rooms. 

research: social context

  • all museums, online databases and second hand sources I have accessed so far only give very specific references eg. textile patterns, furniture – not enough overall contextual background information about social/cultural context
  • –> stepped back to think about housing in general –> council houses in uk/london?
  •  initial research – found really interesting post WWI history of council housing, boom because of post war shortage, government finally decided to pitch in and fund new estates
  • more research needed into such estates –> living space based on real still existing council housing

may 18 – tate modern

  • made the strongest impression on me this visit, because of its sheer scale and atmosphere of walking into a dim room
  • was like stepping into another dystopia world, surrounded by flashing lights and noise of radios humming
  • –> using light this effectively to create atmosphere, focusing and contrasting light to highlight the important parts of the design –> apply to design of the interior set

tate exchange:

  • probably my favourite area of the tate, interactive art is something I really enjoy and wish there was more of in galleries/museums
  • was inspired to add to existing scale (above), prompt about society and the influence of art made me think about my recent experiences of feeling displaced culturally in society between east and west, how art is a bridging medium between the two that doesn’t abide by language or cultural norms
  • ‘if this cardboard box was society, illustrate how you would change it’  –> i created installation over space of boxes connected by tape (like the ‘red string’ that ties people together in chinese folklore) as a visual representation of connecting people together, diversifying

 

may 17 – library research session

  • victoria and albert museum online collection archive – able to find fashion sketches, visual graphics and printed matter that weren’t in collection displayed at museum
  • good for specific object reference, again was not too useful for understanding overall social context of ways of life in 1920s
  • overview of other online databases: may prove more useful, searches found more results such as photographs taken during 1920s, interiors of homes, depictions of daily life

may 15 – final animation presentation

feedback on presentation:

  • character-driven story: very much so, did not fully realise until looking back retrospectively, scenes and stories built around main charas
  • if submitting to eg. brighton film festival – slow down credits, adjust slight editing lagging issues with certain shots to give a smoother effect

 

notes from other presentations:

genre research: sci fi

  • ‘notoriously male genre’ – only because of overriding dominance of male-centric stories told in film and males within film industry, something that needs to be addressed and changed
  • reflective of patriarchal society of how even in future speculative alien worlds, women still don’t exist and aren’t given the same opportunities as men to live out adventures of leading protagonists
  • sense8 and outlander – both shows i have watched and enjoyed greatly especially because of the mentioned focus on balancing out sci-fi as an inclusive genre that includes people from all walks of life, breaking stereotypes and social norms
  • ‘feminisation of sci fi’ – i would strongly disagree, hint of a degrading tone much like saying ‘why are women ruining sci fi for everybody’, also is not just about gender but more about including diversity and increasing acceptance, showing a wider variety of society on screen and not just the straight white male

relating to genre animation:

  • reflective of how engrained patriarchal values are in our society – of how we assumed our characters would be ‘he’ and male, do they have to have a gender? could they be female?
  • pushing boundaries of sci fi as a genre – our film coming together and having elements of a rom-com in its feel, could it be an intergalactic love story?
